the dailies: amy from pikaland.

My dear friend Amy is having quite the busy week with the launch of her first PikaPackage Project, so I'm so thrilled to have her join us for a sneak into her creative life! Thanks, Amy!

8.30am: It's a beautiful Saturday! I wake up, and jump right out of bed (although I would love to laze around in bed, it's not in my genes!) and head out to our garden and say hello to my two dogs -- Bessie and Cookie. There's a lot of things to do before the launch of the PikaPackage Project, but today I'm going to venture to town to take a breather.

9.00am: I have a simple breakfast of toasted bread (peanut butter and nutella chocolate spread) and hot cocoa, before I plan out my schedule for the day. I write everything down in my Moleskine planner and right now it's a big pile of scribbles and to-do lists.

10.30am: I reply emails from artists and illustrators who are interested in the PikaPackage project, and also respond to link submissions. I check my Flickr daily (I love Flickr!) and get inspired a lot just from a visit. I also write drafts of posts and research a little on what's new out there.

11.30am: It's time to go out for the weekend (I rarely get out on weekdays), and Mr T, my fiance and I are going to see an art festival happening in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Before that, we have ourself a little hot lunch -- hot pepper pork soup, with rice (a Chinese specialty).

1.00pm: We head off to the city center, and this time we weren't driving -- we decided to take the train! It's hot and I'm all sweaty, but the exercise was good! It's in an old part of town, and it's been awhile since I've been there.

2.30pm: We arrive at the Annexe Gallery, and we take a look around -- my favourite was a gallery that had works by a famous Malaysian artist's work on its walls -- Yusof Gajah, who illustrates children's books and paints his favorite character: the elephant. Ironically, his name "Gajah" also means elephant.

There was also a small gallery for affordable art, and a quick browse showed a variety of contemporary artists displaying their work -- the showing was definitely better than a few that I've seen before.

5.00pm: We're hungry, so we decided to walk and have one of the best porridge in the country -- fish porridge with a side of steamed chicken. The fish is raw when it comes, and we put it into the steaming hot bowl of porridge to cook them. This particular stall was already here when my mom and dad were dating (that's 30 years ago!) Yummy!

7.00pm: We arrive home, and I'm off to make my gocco cards for the PikaPackage project. I sketch, ink and burn the screens (two for this one) and proceeded to ink the cards while Mr T cuts the paper for me to print on.

10.00pm: I'm done with the printing and we're decidedly very hungry because porridge doesn't last very long in our tummy, so we went out to have wantan noodles at one of our favorite stall in the city as a treat (this time we took the car). You would have noticed by now that we like to eat!

11.30pm: Arrive home from supper, and it's time to reply emails (my emails from readers mostly come in at night, and all the action on the website is happening while I'm asleep). I tinker a little on the backend of the website -- adding and checking on what can be improved. I also draft up ideas for posts and save them for another time.

1.00am: Off to bed!
[editor's note: Isn't she WONDROUS?! Thanks, Amy!]

That's a good day, and good food. I just made some stuffed peppers for dh yesterday, and the leftover ground pork mix was for teeny meatballs for congee. Unfortunately, I ate all the meatballs last night they were so good. :-( Another day for breakfast congee... nice synchronicity on the rice porridge.

Sounds like a great day with some yummy food too!

Thank you Erin for inviting me! It's been fun documenting my weekend (this one was particularly more fun because it was the first weekend after I left my job!)

Which brings me to reveal another trivia: Kuala Lumpur actually means "City of Mud".

I have got to stop this, Erin.

You live in Kuala Lumpur?!! That's so cool. I'm from England, but my mum was born there and her mum's family had lived there for many generations!

I think they used to live out of the city, but they moved to England when my mum was two years old

Oh my ... all this talk of Malaysian food is making me really hungry... Fortunately I'll be going home (to Malaysia) for a couple of weeks this summer - I'm SO going to stuff my face :) And maybe even try and organise a meet with Amy to swap gocco notes...

Oh, and if anyone needs a quick Gocco tutorial (here's for you, lulu!), my favourite is still the one over by Sarah at the Small Object:

welcome.

because beauty lies in the details of design. in the pencil shavings, in the blueberry waffles. the vintage dress, framed portrait, old postcard.

design is inevitable. celebrated. design for mankind.
