home sweet home: jaime hamilton.

It's time for another 'home sweet home' feature for this week's series, this one from a VERY resourceful college student!

I'm soooo inspired by spaces that are real and full of kitsch--- the sort of stuff that's given to you that is sentimental, but SO out of the times. Rather than sacrificing your antiquity spirit, simply find a way to re-use the item fashionably!

Jaime (and her roommate) have done just that. I'm in love with the space that she's created on such a limited budget. Check this feather mobile! LOVE!

[feather mobile in bedroom]

Jaime writes: "I first started getting into home decor by reading Elle Decor. Their take on modern style really impacted me. Now I scour the Internet and magazines for decor ideas. I am hooked on blogs like decor8, ikeahacker, apartment therapy, bluelines, home by sunset, and design for mankind (wink!)."

[kitchen vignette created with thrift finds and fun memories]

"I have always liked vintage and modern styles. Graphic prints and strong colors always stand out to me. I would say that my decor style is a hybrid of Ikea, Anthropologie, and Urban Outfitters with a lot of craft or DIY projects thrown in the mix."

"My best friend and I are living on our own for the first time and we knew we wanted to make our place reflect our style and not like a dorm room. We are 20 somethings who make enough money to pay rent, buy groceries and see movies! With that in mind we furnished our place with 'hand-me downs' and we purchased everything else (almost) from Ikea or Target."

[craft area in hallway, made from re-purposed trash].

"We are pleased with the results and are always surprised how our ideas work together. We joke about how hard it will be if we had to break up the 'band' (aka move into separate places)."

[maps hung in hallway to add affordable 'wallpaper' to a blank slate]

"I recommend that you try to see things in a different light. Who says that you have to use an actual curtain to cover you windows? Why not use a shower curtain or a sheet? Using objects in a way that wasn't intended is an excellent way to express your individuality in your home. This is also good for people who, like myself, enjoy shopping at mass merchandisers, but don't want to look like everyone else."

[book clock made as a gift for the mother!]

"Another tip is to never say no to free furniture that is in good condition. You can always refinish or re-purpose the piece. My favorite pieces of furniture were gifted or handed down to me."

[Thanks, Jaime!]

welcome.

because beauty lies in the details of design. in the pencil shavings, in the blueberry waffles. the vintage dress, framed portrait, old postcard.

design is inevitable. celebrated. design for mankind.
